How to shoot an event

Besides that clean and beautiful photos of people that I expect of myself when I shoot an event, I like to add a little bit of flair. This can come in many forms.

Sometimes it takes an angle. Shooting from the top either requires either equipment (which for me has proven to be too bulky) or just holding your camera all the way up and shooting blindly. With practice, you learn to position it so that you get exactly what you want in the picture.

I like to get people in their natural element – preferably catch them doing what they are already doing. I try to stay away from posing people.

While action shots are my favorite, I believe that even a “face the camera” shot can still have a lot of life and beauty in it if done right.

When one person does the opposite of what everyone else around them is doing, that creates intrigue and mystery.

Format shots require careful planning, however you rarely get the luxury to be able to prepare the area before the subjects get there. At this time, it’s important to get vocal so that you can guide people into their positions, ask them to move and remove items around them.
